Randolph, Arizona, a community rich in culture and historic significance, is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. Established in 1925, the community of Randolph at the time was touted as the newest townsite to rival Phoenix. It eventually grew into a multi-generational African American community, a community that persists to the present day, while many other similar historically Black communities in Arizona have not survived.Randolph is the oldest remaining historically Black community in Arizona associated with the Great Migration of the early to mid-20th century.Often referred as “freedmen’s towns,” “freedom towns” or “all-black towns,” African American municipalities were established throughout the U.S.Black communities in Arizona and New Mexico were established in the 1920s and 1930s, with thriving Black populations well into the 1950s.

The 1st Miss Black Rodeo USA is from right here in Arizona

Samirah Miller has been around horses for most of her life, but it wasn't until recently that she took that experience into the ring to compete in the first Miss Black Rodeo USA competition, and she won. And I think for Black rodeo specifically, the organization started because we wanted to highlight a space for Black writers. Because, you know, historically, the word cowboy comes from. It's a derogatory term that's oriented towards enslaved Africans.I think that we don't have to, in the Black community, we don't have to have a negative relationship with it. And I think Beyonce is doing a great job of trying to increase visibility for it. But this is also something, something that we've been doing, and it's something that's not maybe as recognized like on the West, but like, in the East and South areas.You know, it was just something that I was brought into or grew up in. I think with what's going on right now, folks are really wanting to get into rodeo be aware of, like, how to incorporate that in their lifestyle.
